Design Rationale

The arms are based upon the origins of the surname Snowden/Sneddon or from the lands of Snawdone in the bailliary of Lawderdaill. Both places derive their name from the Old English pre 7th Century 'Snaw' meaning 'snow', plus 'dun' a hill or mountain i.e., a hill where snow lay for long periods. The armorial bearings represent the snow covered mountains (Argent) or "dun" or hill, with snowflakes (Argent) representing the "snaw" or snow, in a blue sky. The black (Sable) lozenges represent coal, as the armiger's ancestors were coal miners in Alloa, Scotland for a number of generations. The griffon crest represents the purported origins of the Sneddons coming from the lands of Lauderdale and the use of the gryphon coat of arms by the Lauder family.
