Design Rationale

Clan Crawford Association (CCA) member Daniel Crawford from Michigan's Upper Peninsula registered his arms in the CCA Armorial this summer. The most notable thing about the arms designed with Daniel and his family is that it employs copper, a tincture introduced by the Canadian Heraldic Authority in 2002. Daniel's great Grandfather moved from Glasgow, Scotland to Toronto, Ontario, Canada then to Michigan's Upper Peninsula during the height of the region's copper boom in the mid-Nineteenth Century.

This line of Crawfords have been undertakers for nine generations, and the coffin in the fess commemorates their family business. We had first suggested a winged hourglass for the crest, but Daniel preferred the winged candles we also proposed. They represent the many souls that Daniel's family has laid to rest. The apple blossom seen in base is the state flower of Michigan. The crest, a white-tailed deer, is the official game animal of Michigan; the buck's head with the copper cross-crosslet fitchée is a North American iteration of the clan badge of Clan Crawford: a Scottish red deer stag’s head erased with a cross-crosslet fitchée between its antlers.
