Based on the 1842 Johnston tartan from the Vestiarium Scoticum to represent the Brim-DeForest's ancestral links to the Johnston Clan. The tartan was designed for the first of the name Brim-DeForest: Brady Brim-DeForest of Balvaird Castle. The dark red squares comprise 56 threads – the northern latitude of the family seat at Balvaird Castle in Perthshire. Its longitude west is represented by the three gold lines on that same red. The ancient DeForest connection with France is shown by the French flag – the Tricolour – whose colours are also in the Brim-DeForest coat of arms (with gold) and the Stars and Stripes of the Brim-DeForest’s home country.

Standard:  305 centimetres in length, per fess Argent and Gules with the arms in the hoist, the crest between two representations of the badge all separated by transverse bands Azure bearing the motto Argent with the words Un Cran on one band and Plus Loin on the other, split and rounded in the fly, the whole fringed compony Argent and Gules, the sleeve Gules.>/p>

Design Rationale:

The armiger petitioned the Lord Lyon King of Arms for a grant of ensigns armorial in 2018. The armiger is under the jurisdiction of Lord Lyon King of Arms by virtue of his Scottish Feudal Barony (the Lordship and Barony of Balvaird), and his ownership of the caput of said Barony, Balvaird Castle, in Perthshire & Kinross, Scotland.

The arms were granted by Letters Patent by the Lord Lyon King of Arms Lyon Court, Scotland, on 14th January 2020 and appear on Page 97 in Volume 93 of the “Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland”.

The armiger was acknowledged in the name and territorial designation “Brim-DeForest of Balvaird Castle” by the Lord Lyon King of Arms, named for the family seat of the same name in the Ochil Hills of Perthshire, Scotland. The arms follow the name as represented by the acorns in chief, which allude to both the ‘Forest' of the armiger’s surname and the ancient oak that sits in the inner courtyard of Balvaird Castle. The oak symbolises honour, wisdom and strength, while the fleur-de-lys in base remembers the Auld alliance between the Scots and the French, as well as the family’s French ancestry. The crest of a demi-lion holding a pennon is in honor of the armiger’s fore-bearer in France, de Forest of Quarterville, whose arms are charged with a demi- lion in base. The Cross pattée in the hoist of the pennon represents the armiger’s Scottish ancestors in Clan Barclay who once held the lands of Balvaird, Arngosk, and Kippo. The motto in French “Un Cran Plus Loin" translates roughly as "One Step Further”.
