Design Rationale:
SHIELD:
1. The saltire Azure on a field Or represents the Standish and Silver families of Lancashire, UK and Vermont, USA, respectively, from both of which lines the armiger is directly descended.
2. The eagle Sable in escutcheon represents the Daigre (Daigle) and Saint-David lines of Poitou-Charente, France and Nova Scotia, Canada (formerly Acadie, Nouvelle-France), founding families of the namesake hamlets of Daigle and Saint-David, ME, USA, of which lines the armiger is a direct descendant.
3. The canton Azure dexter bearing the insignia of a Chevalier of the National Order of Merit of the French Republic denotes the armiger's status as a foreign knight of France's junior Order of State, following his appointment by a decree of President Jacques Chirac on 31 December, 2003.
CREST:
This depiction of Capt. Myles Standish (i.e., affronty, vested Azure with cuffs turned Or, wearing a knight’s helm Proper with open visor, bearing in his hand dexter a lion rampant Or, and in his hand sinister a beehive Or upon a platform Proper), denotes the armiger's direct lineal descent from the first military commander of the Plymouth Colony of British North America. The knight’s helm affronty, with visor open, references the paternal ancestry of Capt. Standish, who came from a prominent family of Lancashire knights, manorial lords, and MPs that reaches back in English history to Richard de Standish (fl. 1090-1145).
The lion rampant refers to the armiger’s appointment as a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Order of the Lion on 17 August, 2008, by King Kigeli V Ndahindurwa of Rwanda (1936-2016). S. A. Saint-David was the monarch’s personally chosen biographer, and is the author of the official history of his reign, exile, and death, as well as of the reigns of his immediate predecessors of the former kingdom’s Nyiginya royal dynasty.
The beehive on a platform, a symbol of the Utah Territory, represents the armiger’s great-great aunt, Harriet Atwood Silver Dunn (1818-1858), a Mormon pioneer and one of the founding settlers of the region. She was a wife of Simeon Adams Dunn, Sr. (1803-1883), President of the Seventies Quorum in Brigham City, who was a prominent associate of Brigham Young; the latter performed their wedding ceremony on 3 January, 1847, in Winter Quarters, Nebraska.
DECORATION:
The decoration pendant below the armiger’s shield is the insignia of a Hereditary Companion of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States, founded on 15 April, 1865, in Philadelphia, PA. The Order of the Loyal Legion is an American patriotic institution whose members strive to commemorate the efforts and sacrifice of ancestors who served as officers of the Union Army, Navy, Marines, and Revenue Cutter Service during the Civil War, as well as to perpetuate the memory of one of the nation’s greatest leaders, President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865). The armiger was appointed a Hereditary Companion on 25 January, 2022, with Insignia No. 22837; the Order’s insignia is approved for uniform wear under US Code Title 10, Chapter 57, Section 1123A (“Right to wear badges of military societies”).
The armiger is the great-great nephew of 2nd Lieut. Oscar Hayes Silver, of Company B, 27th Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, who was born at Bloomfield, VT, on 20 June, 1829; he died at DeValls Bluff, AR on 29 August, 1863, after a brief illness. A junior officer of the Union Army, Silver was among those who participated in the Siege of Vicksburg under the direct command of Col. Conrad Krez (1828-1897). Having been mustered into the 27th Wisconsin as a 1st Sergeant in 1862, he was promoted and commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant on 14 July, 1863, ten days after the Union forces’ takeover of the city of Vicksburg, which had been a central lynchpin of the Confederacy’s systems of rail and river transport throughout the first two years of the Civil War.
A graduate of the University of Vermont (Class of 1851), and a lawyer by profession, 2nd Lieut. O. H. Silver was a son of Hon. Arad Buswell Silver (1793-1850), a long-time representative for Essex County in the Vermont State Legislature. His mother, Sophia Emily Nichols Silver (1792-1865), was a direct lineal descendant of Mayflower Compact signatories Capt. Myles Standish, John Alden, and George Soule, via her great-great grandmother, Sarah Standish Soule (1666-1740), wife of Benjamin Soule of Duxbury, Plymouth Colony (1665-1728). Attorney Silver, although a native of Vermont, chose to take up the practice of the law "out West," eventually settling in Plymouth, WI, from whence he was mustered into the 27th Regiment of the Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry.
MOTTO:
FORWARD
The armiger has chosen this motto, which is also that of the State of Wisconsin, in memory of 2nd Lieut. O. H. Silver, a younger brother of his great-great grandfather, Hon. William Riley Silver, Sr. (1820-1894), the former having settled in the state to practice law during the 1850s.
CRI DE GUERRE:
QUIS UT DEUS (“WHO IS LIKE GOD?”)
The armiger’s cri de guerre, which is the motto of Saint Michael the Archangel, bears a direct connection to his appointment as a Cavaleiro Honorário of the Equestrian and Military Order of Saint Michael of the Wing of the Royal House of Braganza on 1 February, 2017. This ancient royal order of chivalry, the first in Portuguese history, was founded to commemorate the victory of King Afonso Henriques (fl. 1109-1185) over the Moors at Santarém in 1147. Its spiritual seat since that time has been the Royal Abbey of Alcobaça; the Order was recognized by a papal bull of Pope Alexander III in 1171, and also more recently, in 2021, via a bull promulgated by Pope Francis I in celebration of its 850th Jubilee Year.
As Saint Michael is widely known to be the patron of soldiers, militia members, and police officers, among others, the inclusion of this cri de guerre is also meant to commemorate the military careers of the armiger’s martial forebears: Capt. Myles Standish (ca. 1584-1656) [Indian Wars], Pvt. Samuel Silver (1760-1794) [Revolutionary War], Cpl. James Buswell Silver (1791-1835) [War of 1812], and 2nd Lieut. Oscar H. Silver (1829-1863) [Civil War].

Other Items & Honors
National Order of Merit of the French Republic: On 31 December, 2003, the armiger was appointed a Knight (Chevalier) 1 of the National Order of Merit of the French Republic (Ordre national du Mérite de la République Française) by President Jacques Chirac. The National Order of Merit is the junior of the two Orders of State of France, after the Legion of Honor (Ordre national de la Légion d’honneur), and was founded by President Charles de Gaulle on 3 December, 1963.
Royal Order of the Lion of Rwanda: On 17 August, 2008, the armiger was appointed a Knight Grand Cross1, 4 of the Royal Order of the Lion of Rwanda by King Kigeli V Ndahindurwa. The Royal Order of the Lion, known as the Intare (lit., “lion”) in Kinyarwanda, was founded in 1946 by King Mutara III Rudahigwa, the first Roman Catholic King of Rwanda. It was created as a Royal Order of State of the Kingdom of Rwanda, and in 1947 was registered with the Vatican State through its Foreign Missions Office in Paris. The creation of the Intare as a Royal Order of State makes it unique among the honors of the Rwandan kingdom, since the remaining three (i.e., the orders of the Crested Crane, the Crown, and the Drum) were created strictly as dynastic honors of the Royal House. The Republic of Rwanda did not retain the Order of the Lion in its honors system after coming to power in 1961, and the current Head of the Royal House thus continues to grant it by virtue of his status as a de jure head of state.
Royal Order of Saint Michael of the Wing: On 1 February, 2017, the armiger was appointed an Honorary Knight (Cavaleiro Honorário) 1 of the Royal Order of Saint Michael of the Wing (Real Ordem de São Miguel da Ala), as well as a Professed Brother of the Royal Brotherhood of Saint Michael of the Wing (Irmão Professo da Real Irmandade de São Miguel da Ala). Both of these institutions are currently under the leadership of H.R.H. Dom Duarte Pio, Duke of Braganza (de jure S.M. El-Rei Dom Duarte III), who is recognized by Portugal’s government as the country’s most senior royal figure, as well as the fons honorum of all of the remaining dynastic orders of knighthood and merit of the Portuguese Royal House.
Order of the Companions of Honour of the Royal House of Kupang: On 28 April, 2016, the armiger was appointed a Companion of Honour of the Royal House of Kupang (Ahli Kehormatan Kraton Kupang) 1 by H.R.H. Don Leopold Isu Nisnoni, Raja of Kupang and Liurai of Sonbai Kecil, a sub-national monarchy of West Timor that is fully recognized by the central government of the Republic of Indonesia, within whose geographical territory it lies. The Royal House of Kupang maintains the Order of the Companions of Honour to recognize those who have made significant contributions in the form of acts of merit towards the Royal House and people of Timor. This distinguished companionate stems from both the historical and current honors systems of the Royal House of Kupang. The Order has three grades or classes. The 1st class is generally reserved for nobility, heads-of-state, grand masters of Orders, etc.; the 2nd class is reserved for those who are considered to be relatively influential recipients. The 3rd class is for other individuals who merit recognition; this is typically the entry class for most new members.
Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States: On 25 January, 2022, the armiger was appointed a Hereditary Companion 1 of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States. The Order of the Loyal Legion is an American patriotic institution whose members strive to commemorate the efforts and sacrifice of ancestors who served as officers of the Union Army, Navy, Marines, and Revenue Cutter Service during the Civil War. Its insignia is approved for uniform wear under US Code Title 10, Chapter 57, Section 1123A (“Right to wear badges of military societies”).
