Design Rationale:
Shield: The castle reflects possible derivation of the Burkart surname—“a fortified high place”or“guardian of the castle”. The escutcheon bears a version of the arms of Bavaria, Paly bendy Argent and Azure—a nod to paternal and maternal ancestors who emigrated from Bavaria. The three fig leaves in chief signify the work of many forebears in the agricultural and forest products fields.
Crest: The mailed glove alludes to those who served in the military, while the lightning bolt represents family members who made notable contributions to the construction and operation of hydro-electric generating facilities and telephony. The peavey more specifically symbolizes those ancestors who worked in logging and sawmill operations.
Motto: the motto.honors the family’s proud tradition of service to the church as laity, clergy and professed religious.
The achievement of arms was designed in memory of ancestors with the expectation that descendants may opt to change the crest and motto, while retaining the design of the shield.
